Knowledge of local agro-biodiversity resources is traditionally passed on from the older to the younger generation, but this culture and indigenous knowledge is fast disappearing due to the uptake of modern conveniences and electronic devices. To regenerate and maintain this transfer of indigenous  knowledge, and highlight the importance of agro-biodiversity for livelihoods, TABI supports the inclusion of agro-biodiversity issues in student curriculums. Not only will this raise the awareness and knowledge of agro-biodiversity for students and communities, but can also lead to the uptake of initiatives in participating communities.

Expected Impacts on Agro-Biodiversity, Livelihoods and Poverty Reduction:

  • Changes to village livelihoods is leading to less passing on of agro-biodiversity knowledge between the generations – including agro-biodiversity in school curriculum can assist in maintaining this knowledge
  • Increased awareness and education regarding the importance of agro-biodiversity in younger generations will ensure the conservation of these resources is considered by future decision makers.
  • An understanding of the importance of agro-biodiversity resources available for use and management leads to more diverse and resilient livelihoods.
